About the Project

Gladstone 80/10 architectural cable mesh installed as cladding at Wembley Stadium. The cable mesh is used to provide an aesthetically pleasing, semi-transparent 'skin' to the open areas of the building above the entrances.

Wembley Stadium was built on the site of the previous 1923 Wembley Stadium. It is a UEFA category four stadium and has a seating capacity of 90,000 (105,000 combined seating and standing). It is England's national stadium and the 2nd largest stadium in Europe. Designed by Foster and Partners and HOK Sport (now Populous), it includes a partially retractable roof.

Glimmer glass mesh-reinforced resin forms a dynamic kinetic façade at University College London Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour.

Locker Architectural Ltd supplied 3800 pixelated panels to form the façade to the Ian Ritchie-designed Sainsburys Wellcome Centre. To achieve the required dynamic effect the Locker team developed unique, custom-formulated GRP 'pixels' designed to ripple and shimmer with the changing breeze. Each pixel is constructed from Glimmer glass mesh-reinforced resin to achieve high bending and impact strength whilst still maintaining 85% light transmission values. 3800 pixels were laser-cut to 0.6mm tolerance then edge sealed by hand. The combined ripple effect of each pixel creates undulating waves of movement travelling across the façade that are fascinating to watch.

The Glimmer pixels are UV stable and conform to BS Class O fire rating.

About the Project

Waterloo woven wire cloth installed as façade cladding at Plymouth Theatre Royal TR2.

Plymouth Theatre Royal’s complex provides a single location for the production of theatrical works, including the construction of sets, costumes and props, combined with rehearsal and education spaces. Sited on reclaimed land overlooking the river Plym, inland the area is industrial, with BOC, a fish factory, oil, sewerage, fertilisers, and the usual crop of tin sheds, engineering structures and the occasional oil tank or gasholder. Into this mix PTR2 forms the thin end of a regeneration wedge.

Ian Ritchie Architects’ multiple-award-winning design provides an open interconnected web of the activities involved in the production of theatre – and PTR2 meets the crucial aim of creating a sense of community and respect for the work of others.

Based on a flexible linear plan, rehearsal and education pods, workshops and assembly spaces slide along the length of a common circulation spine. A palette of tough materials – stone, zinc, and most spectacularly woven bronze – has been employed to meet the challenge of a harsh environment and the demands of making theatre. With time, weather, and the salt-laden air, the bronze will blacken, with hints of green and gold; the bright zinc and galvanised surfaces will develop a mottled softness; internal workshop wall and floor panels will acquire a patina through paint and damage before being replaced. This is an architecture of erosion, time and theatre. [Source: Ian Ritchie Architects]

About the Project

Gladstone 100/10 architectural cable mesh installed as feature cladding at Peckham Library, London.

Part of this unique design involved the installation of feature lighting which transforms the mesh into an ethereal blue shimmering curtain at night. Peckham Library was designed by Alsop and Störmer and won the RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture.

About the Project

The Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) 42m high main building is clad in Locker tension fabric mesh. Chineham mesh is used to clad the roof, and Caledonian 752 mesh is used for the sides and lower levels.

Created by internationally renowned architect, Jean-Robert Mazaud of S’PACE Architecture, the facility's design minimises offensive odours by drawing air constantly into the building from outside. The open weave of the tension fabric mesh facilitates this perfectly while blending beautifully with the curved timber frame to also present a visually appealing facade.

Main contractor: Clugston Construction Ltd

About the Project

The former Press and Broadcast Centres for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has become Here East, a new digital quarter for East London.

The complex is a 24-hour media hub that caters over 20,000 broadcasters, photographers and print journalists facilitating broadcasts to 4 billion people worldwide. It contains an International Broadcast Centre and a Main Press Centre.

White powder coated Broadway expanded metal cladding is installed to effectively conceal and protect plant and services around the top of the building. The structure of the mesh facilitates transmission of daylight whilst concealing services behind, and blends perfectly with the aesthetics of the overall design.

The same Broadway mesh pattern is also used internally as an aesthetic screening around rooflights.
